I Wrote a Children’s Book Because I Could

Sep 12, 2022 | Learning Aid, Lessons

Executive Summary.  Nothing is better than getting your kids interested in what you do for a living by reading to them to sleep at night about the glorious business of asphalt milling!  Then fill it back in with asphalt!  Good times!  Try reading fun rhymes to them in a children’s book written by your humble author!

Wait, what?!  You wrote what?!  Yup, I did it.  The twenty-something year old on TikTok®  told me it was easy:  hire an illustrator, write a quick rhyme, and throw it on Amazon®.  She made it sound like it would take a three-day weekend to get it all done.

Well, it took a year.  I changed illustrators because the termites (which are the main characters) she had drawn were giving me nightmares.  Plus, bless her heart because she was excellent, the road signs were triangular and the cars were on the wrong side of the road.  She was English.

That sounds awesome!  Where can I buy one?  Well, yes, a bit of shameless self-promotion here, but you can buy on Amazon®.  You’ll have it in just a few days – it took three calendar days to get to Hawaii!  You can also go directly to the webpage via this QR code!

Any other books coming?  Heck yeah!  I’m thinking the next one is Beams over Streams, Let’s Build a Bridge, but I haven’t started it yet.  Still learning the ropes with this first one.  I’d like to do a series with Ted the Termite and his dad building a bridge, surveying, forming concrete, laying pipe, et cetera.

What’s the age range for this book?  You know, I don’t know.  For the readers of these articles, you’ll probably follow along fine.  And it’ll even be fun to explain to your kids what mom or dad does for a living and what the construction equipment is in the book.  However, for those outside of our business or a child on his/her own trying to understand some of the vocabulary, it may be a challenge.  But, we’ll see.  One guarantee, Jared did a great job on the illustrations!

My story.  I’ve always wanted to be an educator.  It’s why I’ve consulted to HCSS for the past five years – I’ve really enjoyed teaching (adults) how to use the software.  And how to estimate.  And how to deal with claims.  But, I never had kids, but really enjoy them.  So, with all this writing I do, I just figured why not publish a book for kids.  I hope you’ll support me, and the industry, and use my book to get your kids interested in our business.
